Don’t get injured by your turkey

Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016

You’ve probably heard about proper bending and lifting techniques, and know to bend with your legs and keep the weight close to your stomach when lifting something heavy. Sounds simple, but this can be harder to do, and potentially hazardous, with a hot roasting pan.

After the holiday season, physiotherapists often see and treat patients who hurt themselves while cooking their turkeys. The most common injuries are a painful back, and neck and shoulder strains.

Follow these tips to prevent injury:

Keep a tidy workspace

  • Plan ahead so you know exactly where you will set the roasting pan after taking it out of the oven
  • Ensure there’s a clear space to easily set the pan on the counter

Use the right equipment

  • Use a sturdy roasting pan instead of a disposable foil pan. This will prevent the turkey from shifting while you lift it
  • Use good oven mitts so you can grasp the hot pan properly

Use proper lifting technique

  • Pull out the oven rack so you need to bend less
  • Keep your feet wide apart and bend from your hips  - stick your backside out as if you are sitting on a bench
  • Beware of bending and twisting at the same time
  • Lift the turkey, then walk around instead of twisting at your waist

Ask for help

  • If you can’t safely follow the steps listed above, ask for help
  • You and your helper should follow the same tips while completing a 2-person lift
